Ancient sword was found in Jerzwałd

An amateur archaeologist found in 2015 near Jerzwałd (Poland) and donated to the museum an antique sword, probably from the 4th century CE. According to archaeologists, it may be a spatha sword from the late Roman period, unique in the lands of the former Balts.

During archaeological research, ever conducted between the lower Vistula and the Nemunas, only a few copies of such weapons were found – e.g. in the barrow cemetery near Suwałki and in the grave of a warrior on the Sambia peninsula. The sword from Jerzwałd is another valuable find in this area.
