Early Christian tomb from Roman times discovered in Serbia

Scientists found in the ancient city of Remesiana (now Palanka in southeastern Serbia) an early Christian tomb from Roman times – roughly from the 4th-5th centuries CE.

In the open grave, there was a skeleton and several objects: a bronze fibula, remnants of clothes or a glass vessel. The walls of the tomb are made of brick and the floor is wooden.

Evidence of Christian burial is the presence of benches and tables for the supper in the tomb. These types of tombs are called “mensa”. Scientists believe that a person from the upper social classes was buried in the grave.
