Discoveries and news in Rome

In the Roman fort of Vindolanda, more than 400 men’s, women’s and children’s size shoes were found. In total, more than 7,000 shoes from Roman times have been discovered at the excavation site, located in England between the rivers Tyne and Solway.

In central France, in the city of Autun (ancient Augustodunum), a completely preserved vase from the end of the Roman Empire was discovered during excavations in the ancient cemetery.

In North East Wales, at Wrexham, a Roman villa was discovered that dates back to the early 4th century CE. The discovery was made by seekers of ancient artefacts.

In eastern Serbia, in the ancient Viminacium, the foundations of a large building that scientists believe could be the headquarters of the VII Claudia Legion.

In Pompeii another sensational discovery was made – the bodies of the owner and his slave were dug out of the ground. Scientists were also able to determine that the master died at the age of 40, wearing a warm coat, and the slave in young age and wearing only a tunic.

The ongoing excavation work at Pompeii has brought another amazing discovery. This time, scientists found a beautifully preserved wall fresco depicting the mythical Theseus and Ariadne. The scene shows the moment when Theseus leaves the sleeping Ariadne, who previously helped him kill the Minotaur.

In southern Turkey, during excavations in the ancient city of Patara, the remains of an ancient altar decorated with the image of a large snake were found. In ancient times, snakes represented the deities of the underworld or were their link with the world.

In the years 2014-2016 in the vicinity of Winchester, in the so-called Worthy Down Camp, excavations were carried out in the late Roman cemetery. Later, scientists conducted a detailed analysis of the finds.

In northern France, at the site of Vaugourdon, the remains of a Roman-Gallic wine press were discovered, dating back to the 2nd century CE. According to scientists, it is the earliest archaeological evidence of winemaking in this part of France.

In northwestern Germany, in Kalkriese, an amazing find was discovered – a fragmented Roman armor (lorica segmentata), which belonged to a legionary from one of the three legions that were defeated by the barbarians in 9 CE in Teutoburg Forest.
