Roman port discovered in Portugal
Postal

A combined team of researchers from Portugal and Germany discovered the remains of a Roman port, which – in their opinion – is in good condition.

In ancient times Boca do Rio (south-west of Portugal) was just next to the Ocean. The waters were much deeper in land, than now. This place was famous for a well-developed fish complex – especially in the 2nd century CE. Discovered remains of the port, prove how extensive infrastructure was in this place.

Archaeological works have been carried out since 2016. The ancient village was also made by, for example, a large villa, facing the ocean, with several mosaics, frescoes and objects of everyday life. What’s more, on the spot, scientists found traces of Roman buildings in which the famous Roman fish sauce – garum was made.

The resort was abandoned in the first half of the 5th century. The next inhabitants appeared in the sixteenth century, who used the abandoned Roman structures.
