Silver disk depicting winged ancient Medusa has been discovered in England

A silver disk depicting a winged ancient Medusa has been discovered in England. The object is almost 1,800 years old and was discovered in Vindolanda, in the former Roman auxilia camp.

The discovered object is an example of a phalera, a military decoration that was used to decorate the armor for, among others, military parades; it was awarded for bravery on the battlefield. The artifact was found in a military barracks and dates back to the reign of Hadrian (117-138 CE).

The object is due to undergo maintenance and will be placed on a local exhibition.
