In Turkey, in the central part of the country, a Roman mosaic dating back to the 2nd century CE was discovered in 2016.
The discovery was made in the village of Elmali. After heavy downpours in the grain field, the ground revealed a mosaic. As stated by the provincial governor, mosaics were usually found in wealthy Roman houses and depicted Greek heroes. The find is 48 square meters, where practically half is destroyed.
Scientists assume that the mosaic was in the dining room of a Roman house. The work shows animals that, in the opinion of researchers, may refer to Hades – the god of the underworld of the dead. There are plans to transport the find to Ankara and display it to the public.
