Archaeologists discovered in Cologne (Germany) the extremely interesting foundations of the building, which – it turns out – belonged to the Roman library. It was founded about 1800 years ago, in the Roman colony – Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium.
The first fragments of the building’s wall were excavated last year, during construction works for the new Protestant church. Initially, the specialists suspected that the walls belonged to the building in which the local residents’ meetings took place. However, after comparing the structure of the building with other ancient buildings (including in Ephesus), it turned out that it was a monumental library from the second century CE.
The future church is to be linked to ancient remains, so that visitors can see the preserved walls, and archaeologists can continue their researches.
