Curiosities of ancient Rome (Artifact)

The world of ancient Romans abounded in a number of amazing curiosities and information. The source of knowledge about the life of the Romans are mainly works left to us by ancient writers or discoveries. The Romans left behind a lot of strange information and facts that are sometimes hard to believe.

Bronze sculpture depicting a pig. The object was found in Herculaneum and had votive connotation. The inscription “HER. VOR. M.L.” means “For Hercules, from Voesius, Freedman of Marcus“. The picture was taken at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (southern England).

Mosaic showing Thucydides

Mosaic depicting the Greek historian Thucydides. The object is dated to the 3rd century CE and was found in Jerash (Jordan). You can now admire it in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.

Preserved lorica segmentata

Extremely rare and well-preserved remains of the armour of Roman legionaries – lorica segmentata with the reconstructed fragment. The object dates to the 1st – 2nd century CE (probably 122-138 CE) and it is located in a museum in the Roman town Corbridge.

2,000-year-old Roman chariot model

A 2000-year-old model of a two-wheeled Roman chariot – biga, harnessed with two horses. The object is located in The British Museum and was discovered in the 1890s in Tiber. A charioteer and one of the horses have not survived to our times.

Man with rooster head on mosaic

Roman mosaic showing the mysterious figure of a man with the head of a rooster. The object comes from Brading Villa on the Isle of Wight in England. Scientists suspect that the character may satirically depict the emperor Constantius Gallus (reigned in 351-354 CE), whose nickname means “cock” in Latin. The mosaic is dated to the 4th century CE.
