Plaster cast of body
Plaster cast of body

Plaster cast of the body of a person who died as a result of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. The object is located in a glass box in the atrium of the so-called The Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii.

The plaster cast was made thanks to the genius method of Giuseppe Fiorelli. Giuseppe Fiorelli, in the 19th century, as head of the excavations in Pompeii, developed a method of making plaster casts of bodies. Through a small hole, he poured stucco plaster, which filled the entire empty space. After setting the plaster, he removed the layer of ash, revealing casts of bodies, objects, building elements, etc.
