Ceremony in Rome

As it turns out, the Romans took magic very seriously, because they even regulated its use legally in their famous 12 tables.

There was Roman law (found in the famous Law of XII tables) that forbade the use of magic and spells. Table VII mentions that anyone who uses magic to prevent any kind of crop from growing in another will be sacrificed to the goddess of vegetation Ceres.

Moreover, in the same table, it is written that whoever commits to inconvenience another person by means of spells should be condemned to death.
