Swastika on a Roman mosaic shown with a fish and the inscription FELIX meaning happy

Swastika, as a result of Hitler and Nazi Germany, became a symbol of hatred and racial segregation. Not many however realize that 卐 symbol was already used in ancient times, all around the world, and had a completely different meaning.

The word “swastika” comes from Sanskrit and means “bringing happiness.” Swastika is a religious symbol, present in most cultures and religions of the world. Also in the Greek-Roman world, the swastika was used and often appeared in ornamentation and art.

In the Mediterranean area, scientists are discovering new examples of swastika. This symbol appears on mosaics, frescos or on the walls of Christian catacombs, in eg. in Rome. Often this symbol appears in the company of the inscriptions “ZOTIKO ZOTIKO”, which means “Life of life” or “FELIX”, which means “happy”.
