In 2016, after 36 years of restoration, the ancient Church of Santa Maria located in the Forum Romanum was opened to the public. The building dates back to the 1st century CE.
According to information obtained by the New York Times, the church will be displayed to the public. The exhibition will be available until September this year.
Almost 1,200 years ago, the church became an “victim” of an earthquake, and the building was under the rubble that fell from the Palatine. The monumental structure was forgotten for years. In 1900, during archaeological research, a building was accidentally found.
Renovation work, however, only began in 1980, and the church was partially exposed to the public in 2012. Currently, the building is completely renovated.
