Aphrodisias, a small ancient Greek city in Asia Minor (present-day Turkey), turned out to be hiding some really interesting sights. The 2016 archaeological discovery – the giant Roman basin – is set to be fully brought to light within a year.

Excavation work in the city began more than 100 years ago. Recently, scientists have focused on extracting the remains of a Roman object from the ground. The pool was discovered 36 years ago, but excavations have been stalled over the years. The last 5 years have been a period of intensified efforts to bring the beautiful building to the light of day in its entirety.

The pool dates back to the 1st century BCE and compared to a small town, it was really impressive in size. Greek cities, at that time, competed with each other for interesting buildings. The pool described was part of a larger park complex.
