Discoveries and news in Rome

In 2015, Italian archaeologists, while conducting excavations in a small village in Tuscany, partially discovered a Roman mosaic. The discovery is located near the local road in the village of Capraia e Limite.

In the remains of the ancient city of Anazarbus in southern Turkey, archaeologists have discovered a gladiator’s ring. The find was in the former arena where gladiators clashed with wild beasts.

New technologies in the field of photography and laser scanning allowed to better study the discovery in ancient Pompeii – the Republican Baths – probably the oldest baths found in this city.

In summer of 2015 were carried out excavations in the Roman city of Augusta Traiana (southern Bulgaria), where a marble gladiator’s head was found.

In 2015, archaeologists discovered an extremely rare, 4th century BCE tomb of a woman that was created in Pompeii, not yet subjugated to the Romans. At that time, the region was under the control of the Samnites and, according to scientists, the Romans, after taking over these lands, respected the heritage of the defeated people. The find proves that the Romans did not destroy the burial site and did not build any new buildings there.

In 2015, militants of the Islamic State blew up an ancient monument in Palmyra in Syria, built almost 2,000 years ago, the temple of Baalshamin, the Phoenician god of storms.

Roman camp at Novae in today’s Bulgaria was inhabited by more legionaries than previously thought. In addition, it also turned out that the place was not abandoned due to the Huns’ invasion in the 5th century. This is evidenced by the rich houses discovered from that period.

An interesting discovery was made in the heart of the Eternal City in 2015. Nearly 2,600 years old, well-preserved ruins of a Roman house have been found on the Quirinale. According to archaeologists, it was about 40 square meters in size and dates back to the rule of the Tarquinius.
