Discoveries and news in Rome

In early July, a fragment of a 1,800-year-old Roman monument was discovered. The discovery was made by accident during construction works in Vinca, near the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The property was stolen within 24 hours.

In March this year remains of Roman ships were discovered during mine work in ancient Viminacium (eastern Serbia). After several months of renovation, scientists showed the results of their work.

For the first time in history, researchers have managed to use the ground-penetrating radar to locate the entire city, whose traces are underground. An early map of the city of Falerii Novi was created, which was located about 50 km north of Rome.

In the Spanish town of Collado Mediano (near Madrid) the process of restaurants of ruins after the ancient “sanatorium”, referred to as El Beneficio, was completed. Thanks to this, tourists will learn what the Roman way to relax looked like. All this thanks to the support of the local authorities, amounting to EUR 300 000.

A “hand of god” from Roman times was discovered – such sensational messages flow from the vicinity of Hadrian’s wall. The object is made of bronze, weighs about 2.3 kg and according to the researchers was probably a gift to the deity to support the Romans in the military expedition or to be a form of thanks for the care.

A skull from Roman times was stolen from the excavations in Malton, Northern England. The theft occurred on the night of May 9. As reported, after this event, two suspicious men were filming in the area.

North-west of Pompeii are located ancient suburbs, where archaeologists intend to start excavations. Specifically, researchers want to focus on the villa called Civita Giuliana.

A well-preserved fragment of ancient via Tiburtina was discovered in Rome, which was dated back to the 2nd – 1st century BCE. The road connected Rome with Tibur (today Tivoli) and led to the northeast, totalling about 200 km.

A Roman floor mosaic was discovered in the vineyard at Negrar Di Valpolicella (12 km northwest of Verona), in Italy. The beautiful object probably decorated the Roman villa.

In Ostia, a well-preserved Roman sarcophagus was found, which dates back to the second century CE. Inside the object were the remains of a city resident from over 1800 years ago.
