In northern Portugal, in the town of Melgaço, the remains of a Roman camp that was used for the conquest of the northwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula were discovered.
The camp covered an area of 20 ha and could accommodate up to 10,000 soldiers. The object is dated to the 2nd century BCE and was of a temporary nature. Text sources confirm the dating of the object as in 137 BCE. the Roman consul Decimius Junius Brutus led military operations in Gallaecia.
The discovery was made using the remote sensing technique.
