Comitatenses were Roman troops that replaced legions in the later history of the Roman Empire and consisted mainly of heavy infantry. The comitatenses troops were stationed deep within the empire to counter the main strikes by enemy troops. These troops arose as a result of the reforms of Emperor Diocletian (284 – 305 CE).
