Preserved Roman columns in Villa Romana del Casale
Preserved Roman columns in Villa Romana del Casale – a luxurious Roman villa in Sicily. The columns decorated the peristyle (inner courtyard of the building).
In total, the peristyle had 32 columns with Attic bases, which were made of white marble and supported the roof. The tops of the columns were made in the Corinthian order.
In the peristyle, the Romans grew both herbs and flowers. The ancients felt a particular liking for roses, violets and lilies. There were also small statues and furniture; there were also ponds and fountains.
