The remains of a Roman amphitheater were found near the Portuguese town of Marvo.
Roman amphitheater located in Portugal was discovered. The city of Ammaia existed between the 1st century BCE and the 5th century CE, constituting an important point for the Romans due to the quartz and gold deposits nearby. During the research, it was found that the amphitheater had been used for about 400 years. It wasn’t an incredibly large structure – it was intended to entertain the local population. The arena was 54 meters long and 40 meters wide. Most of the structure was made of wood, which was weaker than the stone from which such projects were usually built.
Currently, archaeological work is still ongoing and it is not known what else may be hidden underground.
