Getty Villa is one of two locations J. Paul Getty Museum – an art museum founded by the oil magnate Jean Paul Getty. Getty Villa was founded in 1974 in Malibu in the Los Angeles agglomeration (USA) and is an educational center and museum dedicated to ancient culture, especially Greece, Rome and Etruria. The museum’s collection includes about 44,000 antique objects, dated 6500 BC. up to 400 CE.
The look of Getty Villa was inspired by the famous Papyrus Villa from Herculaneum and several other ancient places. The main architects of the building were Robert E. Langdon, Jr and Ernest C. Wilson, Jr. The archaeologist Norman Neuerburg was consulted on the project.
Although the object was funded by Getty, he never had the opportunity to admire his work. He died two years after opening the location in 1974. After the founder’s death, the museum inherited a large part of the property of $661 million. The money was used to create the adjacent Getty Center in Brentwood.
To this day, the Greek and Italian authorities are bringing charges against Getty Museum, claiming that the objects in the museum have been robbed and should be returned. In 2006, the stele, marble relief, golden grave wreath and marble statue were returned. A year later, another 40 facilities were agreed to be returned to Italy.
Entrance to the 26 ha building is free and possible from Wednesday to Monday. Special historical and music shows take place in the evenings.
