The “Four Seasons” mosaic was discovered in a triclinium domus found in Ravenna during an excavation in 1993. It shows the personifications of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and a figure playing the flute.
Spring wears a short red tunic and its head is decorated with a crown of leaves and flowers. The tunic of Autumn is white, and the winter is wrapped in a green coat. Unfortunately, Summer has not survived. The circle diagram on the mosaic symbolizes the passage of time and the succession of the seasons. The mosaic can be admired with the other discoveries of the Stone Carpet House, in the basement of St. Euphemia church, which grew on its remains in Ravenna.
