In 2015 in Rome, during the construction of the third metro line, the largest body of water in ancient Rome was discovered, which was located on a farm located closest to the centre of the Eternal City.
The artificial reservoir measuring 35 meters by 70 meters is larger than the entire construction site of the underground railway station near St. John’s Basilica and therefore, as emphasized, it could not be fully exposed. According to the calculations of scientists, it contained more than 4 million litres of water used to irrigate farmland.
According to scientists, the farm was destroyed at the end of the 1st century CE and its elements (including the reservoir) were buried.
