In 60 CE, during the reign of Emperor Nero, the commander of the Roman armyGnaeus Domitius Corbulo besieged the Armenian capital of Tigranocerta.

During the siege, one of the Roman catapults threw the severed head of an Armenian aristocrat over the city walls, which then landed in the middle of the city council. At the sight of the head, the council decided to surrender to Rome.
