Quarters of Roman slaves near Pompeii

In August 2023, near Pompeii, in the villa Civita Giuliana, the remains of a slave quarter were discovered. As it turns out, slaves lived in extremely simple conditions, along with rodents.

This is evidenced by the found amphora, stored horizontally under the bed, in which the remains of two mouse moths were found – a Wood or Yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus/flavicollis), one adult and one juvenile, respectively. The room also contained the remains of a bunk and tool compartments.
