Roman fresco showing peacock

Roman fresco showing a peacock. The object is dated to the 1st century CE and was found in Pompeii.

The peacocks were exotic animals in Rome that were imported from India. They were the holy birds of the goddess Juno, who were kept in her temple. However, many rich Romans bought peacocks that adorned their gardens or whose meat was served as a gourmet delicacy.
