Spanish fisherman made an amazing discovery in 2017. In the vicinity of the island of Cabrera, belonging to the Balearic archipelago, he came across the wreck of a Roman ship, which was probably carrying the famous Roman garum sauce.
The remains of the ship are located at a depth of 70 meters in an area of 15 meters. The discovery took place in October 2016. A fisherman fishing in an uninhabited area noticed numerous pieces of pottery in the fishing nets. He informed the relevant authorities. Immediately afterwards, professional divers were sent to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, and carefully photographed the find.
According to scientists, many of the 1000 to 2000 amphorae have not been damaged after almost two thousand years. According to experts, this is the first time a shipwreck found in Spanish waters has been preserved in such good condition.
The ship was probably about 20 meters long. The trading vessel probably sailed from North Africa to Spain, and its trade routes also reached Rome or France.
