As part of the Black Sea Maritime Archaeological Project – conducted since 2015 – scientists have discovered 60 exceptionally well-preserved ancient and medieval ships at the bottom of the Black Sea.
The results of the scientists’ activities within the project exceeded the wildest expectations and it is certain that they provide research material for the coming years. Among the finds are 60 well-preserved ships from Greek, Roman, Byzantine and medieval times. Based on these discoveries, scientists will be able to better describe ancient trade routes and ship construction.
Archaeologists discovered the ships using laser scanners and photogrammetric technology – thanks to this, the bottom of the Black Sea was analyzed. The shipwrecks have been preserved in very good condition due to the fact that at the great depth of the Black Sea there are oxygen-free conditions, which prevents the materials from decomposing.
