Discoveries and news in Rome

Excavations outside the walls of the Roman fort Camelon in central Scotland have brought new discoveries.

In 2021, a Roman stone mine was discovered near ancient Smyrna (today’s Izmir, in western Turkey). The preserved traces prove that the mine worked intensively to meet the demand for building materials necessary for the construction of monumental buildings in Smyrna.

Hundreds of colourful fragments of a Roman fresco have been found in the Cippori National Park. The discovery was made by a team of researchers from the Jewish University in Jerusalem.

In Venice, at the bottom of the Treporti canal, remains of the Roman road were discovered. The discovery was made in July 2021.
