An amateur treasure hunter found a rare two-thousand-year-old Roman pendant. The discovery took place in a field in the village of Farndon, near Chester (England).
Luke Sansom was searching the field with his metal detector when he came across an unexpected treasure. Made of carnelian, the pendant shows a well-built gladiator or soldier holding a shield towards what looks like a tiger or a panther. Scientists estimate that the item dates back to the 1st century BCE.
It is Mr Sansom’s greatest discovery in his ten-year career as a treasure hunter. The artefact caught the attention of the Grosvenor Museum in Chester. Half of the money for the discovery is to be given to the finder, and the other half to the owner of the field.
