The coins, which, according to the latest research by specialists, come from ancient Rome, were mined at the Okinawa Castle in Japan in 2013. It is the first discovery of this type in this country.
The scientific council of the city of Uruma confirmed that in the ruins of the 12th-15th century Katsuren Castle, four copper coins were found, which are supposed to date back to the 3rd-4th centuries CE, and were to be minted in the Roman Empire.
Based on X-rays, the researchers say the coins show Constantine I and a soldier holding a spear. Okinawa’s trade with China and Southeast Asia was very active, which proves that present-day Japan may have had contact with the West.
In addition to finds from ancient Rome, a 17th-century coin was also found, which was minted in the Ottoman Empire.
