Fragments of a Roman necropolis from the 1st century CE were discovered near Santa Maria Novella Station in Florence in 2018. For now, a part of the area at the station itself and a part of the square next to private property in the area has been secured.
The entire site of construction work is very large, around the station and almost the entire length of Via Valfonda, the street leading north from the station. A skeleton dating from the first century CE was found under the street, and the tomb was richly furnished, including lamps and vases. Other skeletons were found between Viale Redi and Viale Belfiore.
One of the archaeologists explained that the burial must have been influential people, given the wealth and quantity of objects with which they were buried. In the station area, in Piazza Adua, the remains of a large room were discovered, similar to the one in Piazza dell’Unità, where a part of a house was found, probably later transformed into a craftsman’s workshop. These are also monuments from the 1st century CE. Perhaps they will become part of the exhibition in the near future.
