In Forum Romanum, a temple and sarcophagus were discovered, which researchers believe may have been dedicated to Romulus – the founder and legendary first king of Rome.
The sarcophagus, which could act as an altar, was found in an underground temple (hypogeum), near the rostrum and the entrance to Curia Julia. The object is dated to the 6th century BCE and is about 1.4 meters high. This is an amazing find, because nobody expected such an interesting find in the center of ancient Rome.
Archaeologists suspect that the temple may have been dedicated to Romulus himself, who according to records was to be buried in this place. No remains were found in the sarcophagus.
