In early July, a fragment of a 1,800-year-old Roman monument was discovered. The discovery was made by accident during construction works in Vinca, near the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The property was stolen within 24 hours.
Scientists, not having the appropriate equipment to take the artefact (it weighed half a ton), decided to leave the discovery and arrange transport. To their surprise, the object was no longer there on the second day. It is not an isolated case, as thefts of this type are common. These types of stolen items are then sold to private Western collectors for a huge amount of money. The case has already been reported to the police.
According to archaeologists, the monument was part of a larger Roman sculpture. The fragment showed 2 large human feet. Another stone, in turn, had a Latin inscription in 15 lines, which told the story of a high-ranking Roman officer. He served in 3 different Roman legions, took part in the war with the Parthia, and received many awards for his service.
