Bust of Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus

Roman marble bust of Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus. Object is dated to 170—180 CE. It is located in National Archaeological Museum in Venice (Italy).

Pompeianus was a general during the rule of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. He distinguished himself during wars with the Parthians and the Marcomanni. Marcus Aurelius respected him so much that he agreed for his marriage to Lucilla, a daughter of Marcus Aurelius. What is interesting, Pompeianus was offered the imperial throne three times; however each time he refused.
