Lion knocking down panther

This post is also available in: Polish (polski)

A lion taking down a panther
Lion knocking down panther

Roman mosaic showing a lion knocking down a panther. The mosaic can be seen at the Archaeological Museum of Naples, and it comes from the so-called the Pigeon House in Pompeii, located in the southwestern part of the archaeological site.

Interestingly, the beautiful lion with a panther can be seen not only in Naples. It just so happens that an almost identical mosaic was unearthed in the ruins of the Roman theater in Gubbio north of Rome. Strange fate has meant that the mosaic from Gubbio now adorns the library of the aristocratic palace in England – Holkham Hall in Norfolk. Perhaps both are reproductions of some other known work.
