Palmyra and its beautiful monuments will be opened to tourists in 2019. Intensive renovation works carried out in the ancient city allowed to reproduce in part what was destroyed by ISIS or during the civil war.
Palmyra was occupied twice by ISIS between 2015 and 2017. As a result of destructive ISIS activities, a lot of ancient objects have been destroyed: temples, statues, triumphal arches, columns.
This place was once one of the largest tourist attractions in Syria, which was visited by 150, 000 people a year. Palmyra, once called the “Pearl of the Desert”, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As reported by the Syrian government – for a long time, pressure has been put on faithful reconstruction and repair of losses caused by ISIS. What is more, other countries offered a help: Russia, Poland and Italy. Thanks to the large support, Palmyra’s ruins will opened for tourists again next summer.
