Frescoes stolen more than 50 years ago were recovered
A transatlantic investigation allowed the Italian authorities to recover in 2015 a priceless collection of frescoes and other artifacts that were illegally exported to the United States more than 50 years ago. Among the recovered treasures there are three frescoes from Pompeii – a city covered with volcanic ash on Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.
The frescoes were stolen in 1957. One of them shows a young woman with a baby on her shoulder. Another, in turn, shows a woman wearing a long red coat, holding a jug in her hand. The recovered treasures from Pompeii were previously bought by great American magnates collecting artefacts.
