Discovered in 1992, on the site of the former Roman fort of Vindolanda, in Northumberland (northern England), a mysterious ancient artifact has been re-analyzed by scientists. The latest conclusions of archaeologists may shock – they think it may be an ancient dildo!
However, this is not the only hypothesis. The object with a characteristic appearance, resembling a male penis, could also have been a pestle or part of a statue that people touched for good luck.
Despite the still unclear function of the object, researchers are sure that it was definitely not used for darning, as originally thought.
The length of the object is 16 cm, but it may have lost its size with age. The artifact is made of wood. Archaeologists also claim that it is the first Roman object ever discovered in the shape of a penis and made of wood.
