As we can read in the latest Ancient History Magazine (no. 44), recent research in Herculaneum and Pompeii proves that the inhabitants of both cities, as a result of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, died in a different way.

In the south of Spain, in what is now the city of Carmona (ancient Carmo), Roman perfumes were found in a tomb. The burial place certainly belonged to a rich family; urns were found in the tomb, in which the remains of six people (three women and three men) were buried.

Two Roman mosaics and the foundations of an ancient building have been discovered in via Sant’Antonio in Teramo (central Italy). The discovery took place during the renovation of a modern road.

Remains of a Roman fort, the so-called Watling Lodge which was situated on the famous Antonine Wall which passed through central Scotland. The discovery was made thanks to geophysical research.

In Richborough (south-eastern Britain) a Roman gate with a fragment of defensive walls was reconstructed. It was built exactly in the place where the building used to be.

Tourists visiting Pompeii will have the opportunity to see the ancient public laundry, which was opened to the public after renovation.

Another amazing discovery was made in Pompeii – at a collapsed ancient wall, in the so-called In the House of Chaste Lovers, two human skeletons were found.

Scientists have studied a famous Roman vessel – the “Colchester vase” – which has scenes of two gladiators fighting embossed on the walls. The object is on display at the Colchester Castle Museum in England.

In Naples (Italy) a section of the ancient Aqua Augusta aqueduct has been identified. The facility is located under the modern city and was part of one of the branches of a large aqueduct that supplied water to many cities in Campania.

Scientists have discovered traces of three Roman camps in northern Arabia. The westernmost fort was much larger than the other two. The discovery was made by analyzing satellite images.
