Tourists found skeleton of Roman child

Tourists who explored a cave in the mountains in the Latium region in 2016 made a surprising discovery. They found the skeleton of a child that dates back to Roman times.

The bones were in a Roman clay jar that protruded from the ground in a 35-meter-wide cave Grotta delle Capre (“Goat Cave”). The cave is located on a rock promontory Monte Circeo, rising 541 meters above the Mediterranean Sea.

According to scientists, the cave served as a shelter for goats for hundreds of years. Researchers do not rule out that the child’s remains are an example of a ritual burial in this region. Palaeontologists working at the site a decade ago discovered two similar jars of remains and the remains of a hippopotamus.
