The Magistrate was a set of offices in ancient Rome. It is divided into higher and lower.
The higher ones included consuls, praetors and dictators who had imperium, that is, power. The consuls had imperium maius, that is, military and religious power; dictators of summum imperium, that is, the greatest unlimited power; praetors of imperium minus, that is, powerless.
The lower ones included, for example, the aediles or people’s tribunes, who had potestas, that is, power lower than imperium.
