In 2018, in Rome, during the construction of the metro, an ancient military complex with additional rooms probably belonging to the commander was discovered. Nowhere in the world does metro construction last as long as in Rome. As the shovels dig into the ground, it is almost certain that they will find ancient remains.
The Ministry of Culture has just released new photos of former military barracks in the area of Amba Aradam metro station, near Saint John’s Lateran Basilica. Located about 15 meters below the current ground level, the 2nd-century buildings were discovered by archaeologists in the summer of 2016. Now a new wing of the complex has also been discovered. This is probably the Commandant’s House measuring approximately 300 square meters and divided into 14 rooms. The house also had a courtyard with a fountain and perfectly preserved mosaics on the floors. In one of the rooms, an old installation for underfloor heating was discovered. However, in the last phase of work, it turned out that the complex also includes a staircase leading to the first floor, perhaps to a bedroom or an office room.
It was agreed that the entire space of the complex would be dismantled and moved in fragments to another place. There will be detailed research and conservation works. However, it is already known today that the barracks are in good condition for a building so distant in time. After renovation, the entire complex will return to its place. It will certainly be many years before we can admire it.
