In 2017, in the county of Kent (Eastern England), an unusual find was found – extremely unique and rare coins from ancient Greece and Rome. Some objects are almost 2,500 years old.
The discovery took place at Scotney Castle – owned by the National Trust – in one of the desk drawers. No one knew the treasure was there, and it was only thanks to a volunteer looking for photographs that the discovery was made.
It is suspected that the unique hoard of 186 coins was collected by the antiquities collector Edward Hussey III and his son Edwa in the 19th century. It seems that everyone has forgotten about these unique objects that were locked in the desk cupboard.
Most of the finds date back to the late 2nd BCE – 4th century CE. The most interesting is certainly a Greek coin showing a sea turtle, the sacred animal of Aphrodite – from between 600-550 BCE.
