A print by Augustyn Mirys showing the announcement of the Law of the Twelve Tables
After the expulsion of the last king of Rome in 509 BCE the Romans created the Law of the XII Tables (450 BCE) – a collection of Roman laws that lasted 800 years until the end of the Western Roman Empire.
The Law of the Twelve Tables was one of the basic sources of Roman law. Titus Livius referred to it as fons omnis publici privatimque iuris (the source of all public and private law).
