An unusual bust of Ptolemy Apion. The object was found in the Papyrus Villa in Herculaneum. It is currently in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
Ptolemy Apion is the last ruler of Cyrenaica, who in his last will gave his kingdom to Rome. The Roman Senate initially declared the people of Cyrenaica free. Ultimately, however, in 74 BCE it established a new Roman province.
