In 2021, information appeared in the media that traces of a barbarian settlement, which dates back to the times of the Roman Empire, may have been found in the Bydgoszcz Forests.
Among the finds are Roman coins (follises or silver denarius) and a fibula. The mentioned denarius is dated to the end of the 1st century BCE and bears the inscription “Legio XX”.
In the described lands in Roman times there were tribes of Goths and Vandals. Probably the objects were either looted or come from trade with the Romans. Roman coins could be used by barbarians both for trade and as decoration, e.g. follises with holes in the middle were found, through which a string was intertwined and then pendants were created.
The exploration work in the forest was carried out by the “Gaul” Research and Archaeological Association.
