Roman bust of Gaius Julius, grandson and adopted son of Augustus and heir to the throne. The object is dated from 1-4 CE.
Gaius Julius was the son of Marcus Agrippa (Octavian’s friend, advisor and leader) and Julia the Elder (daughter of Octavian Augustus). Gaius and his younger brother – Lucius Caesar – were designated as possible contenders for power in the absence of a natural male descendant of the emperor. Unexpectedly, both died and were succeeded by Tiberius.
