Curiosities of ancient Rome

The world of ancient Romans abounded in a number of amazing curiosities and information. The source of knowledge about the life of the Romans are mainly works left to us by ancient writers or discoveries. The Romans left behind a lot of strange information and facts that are sometimes hard to believe.

Clay ex-vote showing a healed part of the body – vulva. Dated to the 2nd century BCE – II CE. These types of objects were assembled on the altars of Asclepius temples (the so-called Asclepeions)- the patron of medicine.

Wonderful mosaic showing dog with golden vessel

A wonderful mosaic showing a dog with a golden vessel in which wine or water was kept – so-called askos. The object was discovered in Alexandria in 1993 and dates to the 2nd – 1st century BCE. Currently, the artefact can be admired at the Greek-Roman Museum in Alexandria.

Oceanus on Roman mosaic

Oceanus on the Roman mosaic depicted under the form of a crab. At the bottom right and left are two Nereids on sea horses. The object dates to the 2nd – 3rd century CE; discovered in the remains of Utica. The artefact is now in the Bardo Museum in Tunis (Tunisia).

Bucellatum – Roman biscuit

The late-Roman Codex Theodosianus, which is a collection of Roman laws, mentions that a Roman soldier should be equipped with a buccellatum ac panem, vinum quoque atque acetum, sed et laridum, carnem verbecinam, or “hardtack and bread, wine too and vinegar, but also bacon and mutton”(VII.4.6). Hardtack, vinegar and mutton were to be enough for two days, and then the soldier was to use bread, wine and bacon.

Interesting moment of movie “Ben Hur”

Very interesting moment of the movie “Ben Hur” from 2016. The filmmakers used here the method of singing known among others in the US Army, where soldiers respond to the call of an officer. You cannot say that it is not impressive.
